The Society for Civil Rights (Gesellschaft für Freiheitsrechte e.V. or "GFF") is the legal protection insurance for the German constitution. Our lawyers bring cases before the Federal Constitutional Court as well as other courts, obtaining landmark rulings that improve the lives of millions of people.
Thanks to our members and donors from the community — but without government support — we red-card politicians and companies when they violate basic and human rights. For example, when women and men still get paid differently for equal work, or by standing up for freedom of assembly or against government surveillance of citizens.
We have been defending fundamental and human rights through legal means since 2015. As a non-profit association based in Berlin, we use strategic litigation when the government or companies violate the constitution.
We want to
- promote democracy and civil society,
- limit surveillance and digital monitoring, and
- enforce equal rights and social participation for all people.
More than 4,800 supporting members and thousands of donors fund our work for civil liberties. We do not accept any government funding, which preserves our political independence.
