We at the Society for Civil Rights (GFF) stand alongside those who breathe life into our democracy: journalists and whistleblowers, democratically engaged individuals and organizations, scientists, and artists. We are all protected by fundamental rights from the state overstepping its bounds and becoming dangerous to us. When authorities or ministries systematically violate people's rights or excessively restrict their freedom of action, our lawyers take legal action against them. Because a resilient democracy needs the commitment of individuals and the many.

Lawyer and Head of the Work Area "Strong Fundamental Rights for a Vibrant Democracy"

“A liberal democracy thrives on criticism, protest, and free reporting. Fundamental rights are its yardstick. We defend them in court so that our democracy remains open and resilient.”

Our topics

Freedom of press and SPEECH

We use legal means to ensure that fundamental rights such as freedom of the press and freedom of expression are not disproportionately restricted, whether through intimidation, excessive official measures, or criminal prosecution. Independent media and open social exchange are the foundation of a vibrant democracy. The press and citizens must be able to conduct independent research, identify abuses, and express criticism freely.

FREEDOM OF ASSAMBLY

We are fighting in court to ensure that the fundamental right of freedom of assembly, which is essential to democracy, is not unduly restricted—neither by unlawful police violence nor by disproportionate restrictions. Democracy needs strong fundamental rights and a diverse society in which people can openly express their opinions and freely obtain information. This also includes being able to take to the streets together and protest.

TRANSPARENCY AND THE RULE OF LAW

We advocate in court for the protection of courageous voices, for free knowledge, and for transparency. Transparency, openness, and access to government information enable democratic control. This includes strong rights for whistleblowers and clear disclosure and transparency obligations for public authorities. The rule of law is a prerequisite for democracy.

Zivilgesellschaft
